Any suggestions?

I have white columns on my front porch. Last night I wrapped them in barber pole fashion using red ribbon so they would resemble candy canes. I used "permanent" double sided adhesive squares. When I went outside this morning all of them had fallen down. I see this done all the time with ribbon, garlands, or lights. How do people attach these things to the columns to keep them from falling down?
