Why airline prefer to fly over the artic than the equator for chicago to tokyo route?

It's a shorter distance. On a curved surface like the earth, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line - it's an arc. The arc that an aircraft flies is called a "great circle route". For example, the flight from Atlanta in the US to Dubai, UAE travels over Greenland and Scotland during its trip.
