Christian help needed to understand resurrection after death?

I was at a christian funeral last night (non-denominational held at funeral home). My understanding of christianity was that the dead believers wait "somewhere" until jesus comes back to earth, THEN are resurrected to be with god, jesus, and all the good people in heaven. The minister giving the service kept saying the dead person was "with god". Would you all please clarify for me?
